Though now renowned for bleak and uncompromising novels about the fringes of modern society (Motherless Brooklyn, etc.), Lethem’s first published novel was a comic blend of sci-fi and hardboiled detective story featuring jaded PI Conrad Metcalf trying to outwit a tough-talking gangster, who happens to be a kangaroo.
